The Challenges of a Sloped Backyard

The Challenges of a Sloped Backyard

A sloped backyard presents an opportunity to create a yard that is not only more usable but pleasing to look at too. It’s a chance to create productive veggie gardens, beautiful flower beds, plant fruit trees, and to design perfect entertaining areas. Firstly, you’ll need to provide the necessary structure and terracing. As such, you’ll need to introduce attractive features like stone or timber retaining walls, winding stone pathways and maybe a water feature or two. In short, sloped backyards are a great reason to get creative with your landscape design.

Rising to the Challenge

Essentially, to make the best use of a sloped garden, you’ll need some excavation works and retaining walls. Bear in mind you’ll be losing topsoil. Because of this, you’ll need to bring some back once the levelling begins, or treat the remaining soil to make it productive. Everyone knows we are deluged every year with some pretty big rains on the Coffs Coast. So, at this stage, careful consideration of drainage requirements must be made.  Also, if your backyard is very sloped, consider adding a multilevel deck or stone terrace.

Plan for Sloped Backyard Success

Because of the earthworks necessary to create a beautiful backyard from a plain slope, making a plan that will age well is essential. In other words, this won’t be an inexpensive project, so it needs to be right first time. At this stage, it’s best to sketch out your ideas first. Chat about your ideas with the whole family and decide what it is you most want from the space. Next, either take your plan to a landscape designer for further development or approach an experienced structural landscape firm directly. A good landscaping firm will be able to provide practical advice and a good idea of costs to help you hone your design.
